Learn how to work with, not against, your emotions.

It can be incredibly difficult when your emotions are dialled up to 11 and feelings of intense anger or sadness come out of nowhere. When you’re being told that you’re too sensitive or too emotional, it can be hard not to feel alone. Emotions are signals, but when you don't know how to understand what needs they're communicating, they can overpower you and make you feel out of control.

You may be surprised to hear this, but psychotherapy - not medication - is considered the first-choice treatment for BPD. Through tailored approaches like dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), you will learn coping skills to manage intense emotions in the moment and better communicate your feelings to other people. Instead of being labelled as overly sensitive or dramatic, you will learn how to explain what you're experiencing in a way that they'll understand.

How BPD Treatment Will Help

Learning Distress Tolerance Skills

Intense emotions can feel overwhelming and lead to reactions you don’t want. In therapy, you’ll learn practical skills to steady yourself in those moments so you can respond with intention and feel more in control of your life.

Developing Your Sense of Self

If you often feel unsure about who you are or what you want, therapy can help you build clarity. Together, we’ll explore your values and strengths so you can feel more grounded, consistent, and confident in your identity.

Improving Your Relationships

When relationships feel chaotic or confusing, it’s easy to feel misunderstood. You’ll learn communication and regulation skills that help you express your needs clearly and build relationships that feel safer and more predictable.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for BPD

The most well-known BPD treatment is dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT). DBT was created by Dr. Marsha Linehan, a clinical psychologist who actually has BPD herself, to treat her own borderline personality disorder symptoms.

DBT teaches a set of practical skills that support meaningful change, organized into four core areas:

  • Mindfulness: How to become more in tune with your thoughts and feelings

  • Distress Tolerance: How to handle really painful moments without making the situation harder

  • Emotion Regulation: Understanding emotions and building tools to shift them more effectively

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: How to communicate clearly and maintain healthier relationships

At our practice, therapy isn’t limited to teaching skills. Sessions are grounded in validation, collaboration, and a pace that respects where you are emotionally. The goal is to help you apply DBT skills in ways that genuinely fit your life.

Our therapists work with you to understand your experiences, explore patterns with curiosity rather than judgment, and support you in building stability over time. Treatment is tailored to your needs, and the therapeutic relationship becomes a space where you can explore, practice, and grow with support that feels steady and consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to have a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder to start therapy?

No, you don’t need to have a diagnosis to receive therapy! Whether you have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder or not, we can help you learn how to handle intense emotions and improve your relationships.

Q: What are the goals of BPD treatment?

BPD therapy aims to teach you how to cope with intense emotions, cultivate a stable sense of self, develop emotion regulation (a.k.a. the ability to have some control over your emotions), reduce unhelpful behaviours, and improve relationships. Ultimately, the goal is to empower you with the tools to create a balanced, fulfilling life and to manage BPD symptoms effectively, fostering a sense of control and stability in your day-to-day experiences.

Q: How long does BPD therapy usually take?

There’s no fixed timeline. Some people notice meaningful changes within a few months, while others benefit from longer‑term support. Your therapist will help you build skills, understand patterns, and create stability at a pace that respects your emotional capacity.

Q: What if I feel too overwhelmed to start therapy?

It’s completely normal to feel that way. BPD often comes with fear of being misunderstood or judged. Your therapist will meet you exactly where you are, help you slow things down, and create a space where you don’t have to hold everything together on your own.

Q: Where do you offer BPD therapy?

Although our therapy practice is based in Toronto, we offer online BPD therapy to make treatment more accessible to people all over Ontario.

Q: What is the fee for a borderline personality disorder therapy session?

A 50-minute session is $155.
